    C-Art is Cumbria’s countywide arts programme, co-ordinated by Eden Arts. and championing contemporary art practice in Cumbria.

    For the past 6 years, C-Art has connected over 185,000 visitors to Cumbrian artists, and has seen over £665,000 in sales of Cumbrian art.

    The highlight is the open studios and galleries event which will take place from 15th – 17th September 2017. Last year over 81 venues and 110 artists, designers and independent galleries opened their doors to the public.There was also numerous art and craft workshops, demonstrations and special exhibitions taking place.     New for 2017 is the Art Fair at Rheged, which will coincide with the openeing of the third C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition. Now open for submissions, the exhibition will be selected from an open call, with 87 entries in 2016 and 43 artists selected, the exhibition aims to champion excellence in contemporary Cumbrian art. 

    The 2016 winners are Karan Babayan, Cumbrian Artist of the Year, Jonathan Trotman, People Choice and Alan Story, Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year.

    The inaugural Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition took place at the Rheged Centre in 2015 with Sarah Tew winning the award.  Alan Stones was voted the People's Choice from the 25 exhibiting artists.

    15th - 17th September - C-Art Everywhere - A new weekend long event to run alongside the C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the Year Award exhibition in Rheged in September. The event will include pop-up galleries in empty shops and businesses from artists and groups.

     

    November (dates TBC) - Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year at University of Cumbria’s Vallum Gallery.

  • Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition and Awards

    Featuring over 40 exhibiting artists in 2016, The Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition will run from 9th September - 6th  November 2017 at The Gallery at Rheged.

     

    The 2016 exhibition saw over 22,500 visitors to the exhibition, with an eclectic mix of artworks from landscape painting to ceramic sculpture, with a number of renowned guest artists joining the submitted entries.

    The Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition features two awards, The Cumbrian Artist of the Year and The People’s Choice. The Cumbrian Artist of the Year Award is shortlisted and selected by the chosen Young Curators. The £500 award winner will be announced on the preview night of the exhibition. Previous winners include Karen Babayan and Sarah Tew.

    Awarded to Jonathan Trotman in 2016 and Alan Stones in 2015, the People’s Choice award encourages visitors to vote for their favourite artist in the exhibition. In 2016 Jonathan Trotman received just 4 votes more than the second place artist, Tracy Levine. The award of £500 will be awarded at the close of the 2017 exhibition.

     

    2017 will again welcome back the Young Curators scheme, where a group of young people aged 16 – 24 years old are led by 2 arts professionals. The Young Curators will have the opportunity to visit an art gallery, meet the curator and go on a behind the scenes tour, along with working with the arts professionals to select, curate and hang the exhibition for The C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition.

    In addition to the exhibition, C-Art member’s artworks, crafts and reproductions will be available to buy in Rheged Gallery Shop throughout the duration of the exhibition, with visitors of the 2016 commenting it was… ‘An Aladdin’s cave of artwork’ and ‘Fantastic – well worth the visit – super work’.

    The Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year Award returned in 2016 alongside the Young Curators scheme, first piloted in 2013. Successful Young Curators were invited to help select the Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition and award which took place at Rheged from September 2016.

    Short-listed entries to the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year are featured on the dedicated C-Art website and online gallery and are invited to exhibit at the Vallum Ditch Gallery at the University of Cumbria's Institute of Arts.  A panel of arts professionals, Sarah Tew (Cumbrian Artist of the Year 2015), Charles Quick (Professor of Public Art Practice at the University of Central Lancashire) and Roddy Hunter (Director of the Intitute of Arts, University of Cumbria), selected the winner in 2016 as Adam Story.  He won a £500 cash prize. The award was presented by Adrian Lochhead, director of Eden Arts, at the private view of the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition on 1st September 2016.
