  • C-Art Festival BIG Weekend #1 at Rheged 8th - 10th September

featuring the C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition Launch and Award Ceremony, Contemporary Art Fair and more at Rheged, Penrith.

C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition – 9th September – 5th November Admission free – Open 10am-5pm daily

In partnership with Rheged, the C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition is selected from an open call of contemporary artists who live and work in Cumbria as well as those who originated from the county.

The exhibition will feature an eclectic mix of artworks working across all media from traditional painting and sculpture to contemporary video installation and photography, with a number of renowned guest artists joining the submitted entries. The 2016 exhibition saw over 22,500 visitors and 43 exhibiting artists selected from 87 entries.

In an innovative format unique to this exhibition, the work is selected by a group of young people aged between 16-24. These ‘Young Curators’ are involved in all aspects of the exhibition planning, from selection to writing exhibition texts and installing the work. They are led by experienced art professionals who help guide them into informed decisions, making this a fantastic opportunity for young people at the very start of their careers. You can find out more about the C-Art Young Curators scheme here.

The Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition features two awards, The Cumbrian Artist of the Year and The People’s Choice. The Cumbrian Artist of the Year Award is shortlisted and selected by the chosen Young Curators. The £500 award winner will be announced on the preview night of the exhibition. Previous winners include Karen Babayan and Sarah Tew.

“I was completely overwhelmed to win the Cumbrian Artist of the Year Award. It is such a good exhibition with some extremely talented individuals - I am quite humbled to be selected as the winner amongst them”. - Karen Babayan, Cumbrian Artist of the Year 2016

Awarded to Jonathan Trotman in 2016 and Alan Stones in 2015, the People’s Choice award encourages visitors to vote for their favourite artist in the exhibition. In 2016 Jonathan Trotman received just 4 votes more than the second place artist, Tracy Levine. The award of £500 will be awarded at the close of the 2017 exhibition.

Artists wishing to submit work to the C-Art Cumbrian Artist of the Year can do so here.

As part of the C-Art festival 2017, this year’s exhibition promises to show a tremendous variety of artwork in styles that are both familiar and surprising but always championing the quality of Cumbrian Art.

    C-Art Festival Art Fair – 9th – 10th September - Admission free – Open 10am-5pm daily

C-Art has attracted 185k visitors and seen sales of £660k over the past 6 years. The Art Fair is open to applications from both Cumbria and beyond.

  • C-Art Festival BIG Weekend #2 – 15th – 17th September

    Open Studios weekend

Artists and Galleries will open their doors across Cumbria from 10am – 5pm each day. The Open Studios event saw over 25,000 visitors across 81 venues and raised £78,480 in sales for local artists last year.

Eden Arts devised C-Art in 2011 to celebrate the wealth of creative talent in this area of outstanding natural beauty and give visitors the opportunity to explore rural, ‘off the beaten track’ areas of Cumbria, talk to artists, watch demonstrations, participate in workshops and see how work is made in some of the most remarkable towns, villages and buildings in the UK.

C-Art continues to promote the quality and diversity of the artists living, working or from Cumbria, both through open studios and exhibitions. Each year new artists and galleries take part in what proves to be one of the most exciting times of year in the Cumbrian Artistic calendar.

    Art in Extraordinary Places

Along with artists and galleries opening their doors throughout the weekend, Art in Extraordinary Places returns, welcoming stately homes, national trust sites and more who welcome artists working in their grounds, and hosting contemporary art installations,  exhibitions, workshops and events throughout the C-Art Festival.

Crafts and Music Event @ Brunswick Yard, Penrith, with Crafty Vintage

Crafty Vintage and Brunswick Yard come together to bring two days of vintage clothing, furniture, jewellery and more.

They will be joined by the Mobile Meledrome Stage, local bands, wood fired pizza and a selection of local ales and other drinks.

The Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year Award returned in 2016 alongside the Young Curators scheme, first piloted in 2013. Successful Young Curators were invited to help select the Cumbrian Artist of the Year exhibition and award which took place at Rheged from September 2016.

Short-listed entries to the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year are featured on the dedicated C-Art website and online gallery and are invited to exhibit at the Vallum Ditch Gallery at the University of Cumbria's Institute of Arts.  A panel of arts professionals, Sarah Tew (Cumbrian Artist of the Year 2015), Charles Quick (Professor of Public Art Practice at the University of Central Lancashire) and Roddy Hunter (Director of the Intitute of Arts, University of Cumbria), selected the winner in 2016 as Adam Story.  He won a £500 cash prize. The award was presented by Adrian Lochhead, director of Eden Arts, at the private view of the Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year Exhibition on 1st September 2016.
